Vietnam’s Most Spectacular Road Trip, Without the Stress of Driving It Yourself

The Ha Giang Loop is the trip that people talk about for years after leaving Vietnam. Four to six days of mountain passes cutting through limestone peaks, narrow roads dropping into deep valleys, ethnic minority villages where life has barely changed in centuries, and views that make you pull over every fifteen minutes.

Most travelers do this loop on a rented motorbike. It is incredible that way, but it is also exhausting, risky, and not for everyone. The mountain roads are steep, winding, and shared with trucks and buffalo. One wrong move and your trip is over.

We offer a different way. You get the same route, the same views, the same stops, but in a comfortable 7-seat SUV with a licensed, experienced driver who has done the loop hundreds of times. You look out the window instead of watching the road. You arrive relaxed instead of exhausted. And you can actually enjoy the beer at dinner.

We start and end from Hanoi or Ninh Binh. You choose 4, 5, or 6 days depending on how much time you have and how deep you want to go.

Two Ways to Do the Loop

We offer two packages. Both include the same driver, the same car, and the same route. The difference is how much you want us to arrange.

Option 1: All-Inclusive (Everything Arranged)

We book your hotels, arrange all meals, and handle every detail. You just show up and enjoy the trip. This is priced per person and is the easiest way to travel, especially if this is your first time in northern Vietnam.

Option 2: Car with Driver Only

You get the car and the driver, and you arrange your own hotels and meals along the way. This is priced per group (not per person), so it can be more affordable for couples or small groups. It also gives you the freedom to pick where you sleep and eat. Your driver can suggest good options along the route.

Day by Day: What the Loop Looks Like

Day 1: Hanoi/Ninh Binh to Ha Giang

A long drive north through the Vietnamese countryside. The landscape slowly changes from flat delta rice paddies to rolling green hills. You arrive in Ha Giang city in the late afternoon. This is the gateway town to the loop, and your last stop with proper ATMs and shops. Check in, have dinner, rest up. Tomorrow the mountains start.

Day 2: Ha Giang to Dong Van

This is the day the loop begins in earnest. The road climbs from Ha Giang into the mountains and does not come down. You pass through the Quan Ba Heaven Gate with views over the Twin Mountains, stop at Yen Minh, and wind your way to Dong Van, one of the most remote towns in Vietnam. The old quarter has French colonial architecture, and the Sunday market (if you time it right) is one of the most authentic ethnic markets in the country.

Day 3: Dong Van to Meo Vac

The most famous stretch of the entire loop. The road from Dong Van to Meo Vac runs along the Ma Pi Leng pass, a narrow mountain road carved into sheer cliff faces with the Nho Que River hundreds of meters below. This is the view you have seen on Instagram. It is even more dramatic in person. Meo Vac itself is a quiet mountain town surrounded by some of the most rugged terrain in Vietnam.

Day 4: Meo Vac to Du Gia (or back to Ha Giang)

If you are doing the 4-day loop, today you drive from Meo Vac back to Ha Giang through Du Gia, a peaceful valley of rice terraces and small ethnic villages. It is a gentler landscape after the drama of Ma Pi Leng, and a good day to stop at local markets, walk through villages, or swim in a waterfall if the season is right.

Day 5 (5-day option): Ha Giang to Hanoi/Ninh Binh

The drive back south. You can also choose to stop at Ba Be Lake on the way, one of the most beautiful freshwater lakes in Vietnam, surrounded by forest-covered limestone mountains. A boat ride on Ba Be is a calm, beautiful ending to the trip before you return to Hanoi or Ninh Binh.

Day 6 (6-day option): Ba Be Lake

If you have an extra day, spending a full day at Ba Be Lake is worth it. Kayak on the lake, visit Puong Cave with its colony of bats, hike to waterfalls, or take a boat through the river gorge. It is a completely different landscape from Ha Giang and a perfect way to decompress before heading home.

What is the Best Number of Days?

4 days is the minimum. You see the highlights but the days are long and there is less time to stop and explore. 5 days is what most guests choose. It gives you time to enjoy the loop without rushing, and you can add Ba Be Lake on the way back. 6 days is for people who want to take it slow, stay an extra night in the mountains, or spend a full day at Ba Be.

A Real SUV, Not a Sleeper Bus

Your car is a 7-seat SUV (Ford Everest, Chevrolet Trailblazer, or similar). Air-conditioned, well-maintained, comfortable for long days on mountain roads. Your driver is licensed, experienced on the Ha Giang route, and speaks basic English. He knows where to stop for the best views, the best pho, and the safest roads.

This is not a minibus with 15 other backpackers. It is your car, your pace, your stops.

What Guests Say

“We did the 5-day all-inclusive loop and it was the highlight of our entire month in Vietnam. The Ma Pi Leng pass is genuinely breathtaking. Our driver Mr. Duc pulled over at every viewpoint and never rushed us. The hotels were simple but clean, and the food was incredible. We would never have dared to drive this ourselves.” – Julia & Thomas, Germany

“I chose the car-only option because I wanted to pick my own hotels. Best decision. My driver suggested a homestay in Du Gia that was absolutely magical. Rice terraces right outside the window, a home-cooked dinner with the family, and complete silence. You don’t get that on a motorbike tour where you arrive exhausted at 6pm.” – Akira M., Japan

“I did the Ha Giang loop on a motorbike five years ago. This time I came back with my partner and we did it by car. Honestly? I enjoyed it more. Same views, same stops, but I could actually look around instead of focusing on not driving off a cliff. And we added Ba Be Lake, which was a highlight we would have missed on a bike.” – Liam C., Australia

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Ha Giang Loop safe by car?

Yes. Our drivers do this route regularly and know every curve. The car is well-maintained, insured, and much safer than a motorbike on these mountain roads. You travel on the same road as the motorbikes, but in a vehicle with airbags, seatbelts, and an experienced driver.

What is the difference between all-inclusive and car only?

Both include the same driver and car. All-inclusive adds hotels and all meals, priced per person. Car only gives you the vehicle and driver, priced per group, and you arrange accommodation and food yourself (your driver can suggest places). All-inclusive is easier. Car only is more flexible and often cheaper for couples or groups.

How many days should I book?

5 days is the sweet spot for most travelers. 4 days works if you are short on time but the days are long. 6 days lets you add Ba Be Lake and take things slow.

Can I start from Ninh Binh?

Yes. We offer pickup and drop-off from both Hanoi and Ninh Binh. Starting from Ninh Binh adds about 2 hours to the first and last day of driving.

What kind of hotels are included in the all-inclusive package?

Clean, comfortable guesthouses and local hotels. Ha Giang is a remote mountain region, so do not expect five-star resorts. But the accommodations are safe, have hot water, and are run by friendly local families. If you book the car-only option, you can choose your own level of accommodation.

How do we pay?

Cash on the first day of the tour. No prepayment required. Make sure to withdraw enough cash before leaving Hanoi or Ninh Binh, as ATMs in the mountains are rare and unreliable.

Is this trip suitable for children?

The Ha Giang Loop involves long days in the car (5-8 hours of driving per day) on winding mountain roads. It is doable with older children (10+) who are comfortable with long car rides. For families with young children, we would recommend our Ninh Binh day tours instead.

What is the best season for Ha Giang?

September to November is the most popular season, when the rice terraces turn golden. March to May brings blooming flowers and clear skies. December to February is cold and can be foggy, but the empty roads and misty mountains have their own beauty. The loop is possible year-round.

Can I cancel?

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before your tour. No questions, no fees.
